Orange Julius, anyone?

<<img120.jpg>>

<<img121.jpg>>

I thought this was a little surreal. Img120 is a picture of Orange Julius in the mall. Just outside the front counter is about a four story drop. It was just weird to still see the orange tile there on the wall and everything. Img121 is a picture of what the construction workers wrote on the back entrance to Orange Julius, just in case somebody decided they wanted a slushie and found themselves free falling four stories. It's a little hard to see what's written, but I think you can make it out.

Ahh, snow

I was a little discouraged to wake up to snow on the ground this morning. I am very ready for spring. Then I got off the bus and started walking to work in the snow and was reminded that I didn't have to worry about my glasses getting all messy. I could walk with my head up! Last night I opened a steamy dishwasher and instinctively put my head to the side to avoid the steam because it usually instantly fogs up my glasses. Ha! No more! I stuck my head in the middle of all that steam and breathed it in. Triumph! Ahh, simple pleasures.

Pinewood Derby

I have now entered a new phase in life. The pinewood derby phase. Yep, there's no going back now. I never did the pinewood derby growing up, so this was a first for both C and me. I mostly wanted to post here just to put pictures of his car:

C and I had a great time making the car - after looking at several different designs on the internet C decided on the pencil design. It was easy to make for someone like me with absolutely no woodworking skills, and I thought it was pretty creative. We had fun mixing paints to get just the right yellow and red. The car fell right in the middle in terms of speed, about the 5th fastest out of 10 or so cars. But spending some father and son time and having fun is what it's all about, right? RIGHT???

J's Surgery

I just wanted to write a bit about J's surgery to have his tonsils and adenoids removed. All went well. We were at the hospital for about 3 hours, although the actual procedure only took about 15 minutes. We were a little worried J would have a hard time leaving us to go into surgery but he was a very brave little boy and went just fine. It's a little bizarre to me to hand off your son into the hands of the anesthesiologist and watch them walk away with him. You have no idea if he's going to get scared the minute they turn the corner, if he's going to be ok breathing the medication to make him go to sleep, or anything about what actually happens during the surgery. You just have to trust that the doctors know what they are doing. Which is a big reason we did it at Primary Children's - mom was pretty set on doing it there, where the experts are, where everyone staffed there deals specifically with children day in and day out.

Before the surgery our neighbor gave him a stuffed animal to take with him, which was very sweet. Here's a picture of J with "Buddy":

J seems to be doing really well. He was not a big fan of his medication - so we took it back to the pharmacy and had it grape flavored - which helped...a little. We may have a challenge keeping him away from popcorn (he's not supposed to eat anything too rough or scratchy) but he's encouraged to chew bubble gum, so he'll love that. Hopefully this will help him sleep better and breathe better...now if we can just convince him to consistently sleep in his own bed...
